The role of simulation:

1.       After understanding the various meanings and aspects of the term simulation modeling, it is necessary to clarify the role that simulation plays in modernindustrial and business firms.

2.       The role of simulationby first justifying the use of simulation both technically and economically andthen presenting the spectrum of simulation applications to various industriesin the manufacturing and service sectors.

3.       It is also worth mentioning that usingsimulation in industrial and business application is the most common but notthe only field in which simulation is utilized; it is also used for educational andlearning purposes, training, virtual reality applications, movies and animationproduction, and criminal justice, among others.

Simulation Applications:

Today, simulation is being used for a wide range of applications in both manufacturing and business operations. As a powerful tool, simulation models of manufacturing systems are used:

1.       To determine the throughput capability of a manufacturing cell or assembly line

2.       To determine the number of operators in a labor-intensive assembly process

3.       To determine the number of automated guided vehicles in a complex material-handling system

4.       To determine the number of carriers in an electrified monorail system

5.       To determine the number of storage and retrieval machines in a complex automated storage and retrieval system

6.       To determine the best ordering policies for an inventory control system

7.       To validate the production plan in material requirement planning

8.       To determine the optimal buffer sizes for work-in-progress products

9.       To plan the capacity of subassemblies feeding a production mainline
