Total Quality Management (Tqm)

Introduction:

Organisational systems under TQM consist of a series of sub processes which can use inputs to convert them to outputs. The integrated approach is adopted for the achievement of a common goal/aspiration. The contribution from the engineering function has to be perceived as part of the total socio-technical process.

Integrated model of organisational processes:

  • Organisational systems under TQM consist of a series of sub processes which can use inputs to convert them to outputs and become inputs themselves for a subsequent transformation process.
  • This repeated cycle is meant to supply both internal and external customers. The main aim of the process is to add value continually, and reduce waste and lead time.

The propagation cycle for productivity improvement:

Value Added Management (VAM) therefore is not to be considered as an activity with determined dimensions, timescales and potential. It has to be perceived as a propagated process, where TQM and its preaching become a way of life to change performance levels incrementally and/or radically.

A model of the integrated role of the engineering function within organization systems:

The model describes the major elements of organisational systems, which are of a socio-technical nature, by which the dynamic behaviour of organisations is determined.
